It if wasn’t obvious by now, I really like this dice cup. To be honest, I think it gives the cup character and I wouldn’t change it. Cathy tells me this is from the sealant running as she was fine tuning her process. The outer surface has some striations on the surface. The inner surface has some lighter and darker spots which give a real honest to goodness handcrafted look.

While I am no leather expert, I like the overall coloration of the cup. This laser etching process gives the underlying leather a great texture that is not found in hand tooled leather. The scroll work is done by laser etching the design directly into the leather. Nonetheless, it still retains some of its flexibility. The edges are nicely finished to have a soft and appealing edge. The leather has undergone a hardening process to help it retain its shape and form over the long haul. The bottom section is tightly sewn into the cylinder.

The outer layer is finished leather (top grain) and the inner layer is a suede-like texture. The cup’s cylinder is made of a 2-piece construction. Dimensions are 4.25″ in height and almost 3.25 in diameter. It is all finely crafted and looks really nice on my game table. This dice cup is really beautiful! From the scarlet red color to the Norse dragon work around the upper rim it screams “I want to roll dice and take the souls your gamers!” The stitch work is very well executed with no obvious beginning or end. Cathy and I corresponded and viola, it arrived today. Recently I came across the Kickstarter campaign for these dice cups and was struck by their beauty. So, a little disclosure is required on my part. To celebrate D&D’s 45th anniversary, Wizards even partnered with the team at Level Up Dice to create a set featuring a dark blue sapphire embedded inside the d20. Both come with a rolling tray and some themed handouts, including maps. It now has two unique sets of its own on the market, including an exotic blue set themed around the city of Waterdeep and a dark red set themed to the more hellish landscape of Avernus. Recently, D&D publisher Wizards of the Coast itself started selling more elegant dice through local game stores, big-box retail chains, and Amazon. One of the most expensive was cut from solid titanium and ran $344 plus shipping. There at the nation’s largest tabletop gaming convention was a display of products unlike anything that I’d ever seen before, including dice made from old Jack Daniel’s whiskey casks and laser-inscribed sets made from animal horn. I first noticed it at Gen Con in 2015, when I stumbled upon the team from Artisan Dice. Most sets go for less than $20.īut along with a massive renaissance in tabletop RPGs, there’s been a huge surge in boutique dice making. Today, Chessex’s website boasts more than a dozen trademarked textures and finishes, with names like Leaf, Marble, and Vortex. They’re much more vibrant than the original D&D dice, with many colors and patterns to choose from. If you got into pen-and-paper RPGs in the 1980s or 1990s, you likely picked up a set of dice made by Chessex, which has long been a staple brand in gaming shops.
